New Designs Charter School was founded by Dr. Yaw O. Adutwum who firmly believed that setting high standards in a well-structured learning environment would lead to higher levels of student achievement. With 100% of the 2014 graduating class being accepting to college (six of whom went to UCLA, the No. 2 ranked public university in America), Dr. Adutwum proved that often disadvantaged, urban students could perform exceedingly well when provided a rigorous curriculum in a nurturing environment.

A Passion For Excellence

Dr. Adutwum, a former teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District and current Deputy Minister of Basic & Secondary Education for the Republic of Ghana, started the New Designs Charter School with a singular goal: prepare students in grades 6-12 for careers in the fields of medicine, engineering, IT, law and diplomacy. To accomplish this, New Designs has a variety of programs, academies, and partnerships geared towards preparing every one of its students for college.

In fact, the college preparation that students receive at New Designs exceeds the University of California requirements. In its Extended Learning Academies and Accelerated College Program, students can take college courses at the local community college, online, or even at the New Designs campus. Each student accumulates an average of 20 college credits before graduation. The objective is that future students will receive an Associate of Arts degree along with their high school diplomas.

Unique Partnerships

New Designs Charter School, one of the best charter schools in Los Angeles, has worked hard to develop some innovative partnerships with a wide range of community organizations that support its educational objectives. This includes the Loyola Law School Young Lawyers Program and the Youth Policy Institute of AmeriCorps. Charter Asset Management (CAM) is proud to be one of the school’s partners, providing efficient, reliable access to necessary funding which allows the New Designs to continue preparing its students for success.

We are committed to continue our collaboration with New Designs –– as well as other charter schools across the country –– and share a passion for excellence in everything we do.
